With the birds and other wildlife of Canada’s far north as favorite subjects, Kenojuak Ashevak, Qavavau Manumie, and Saimaiyu Akesuk, among others, have created powerful works that have helped bring Cape Dorset artists to the attention of Canada and the world.
Cape Dorset is a thriving Inuit hamlet in the Canadian Arctic territory of Nunavut, about 1,200 miles north of Toronto. For more than sixty years, the community has been home to the Kinngait Studios—the longest continually operating print studios in Canada. Drawing on the community’s wealth of artistic talent, the studios’ skilled Inuit printmakers work with local artists to produce editions of their captivating work.
The studios are owned and managed by the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, which also markets the prints produced by its Inuit artist members to galleries throughout the world. Many of the co-op’s artists have attained international recognition; their well-deserved reputation for artistic excellence is confirmed by the striking notecards in this collection.
